A car that will not start usually points at the battery, the starter motor, or the ignition parts — and the sound it makes tells you which. This guide explains what each symptom commonly means and which part it usually involves.
What usually causes a car not to start
The battery is the most common cause. A flat or worn-out battery cannot crank the engine, and you may hear a click or nothing at all. The starter motor is the next part to look at — a starter that is failing can click, crank slowly, or make a grinding noise. On a petrol car, the ignition parts can also be the cause: worn spark plugs or a failed coil can stop the engine from firing.
The sound is the clue. A rapid clicking usually points at the battery. A single loud click can point at the starter motor. An engine that cranks normally but never fires points at the ignition or the fuel system instead.
What to check by looking and listening
Listen to what happens when you turn the key or press the button. Nothing at all can mean the battery is flat or a connection is loose. A rapid click usually means the battery. A slow crank can mean the battery is weak or the starter is failing. An engine that turns over and over without firing points elsewhere.
Do not keep cranking the engine over and over — it drains the battery and can flood a petrol engine. If the car will not start after a couple of tries, stop and work out which part is the cause before you try again.

A flat battery can often be jump-started from another car, but if the battery is worn out it will go flat again. Jump-starting also needs care — the leads have to go on the right way round. If your battery keeps going flat, call 07961 404768 and we will check which battery fits your car.
